It's hard to imagine that South Korean thriller Squid Game would have travelled anywhere near as far in the early 2000s, but its accessibility via Netflix turned it into a global hit on a scale no one could have expected.

Also helping matters was the streamer's wide variety of options regarding how to watch the show, with subtitling and dubbing available in numerous different languages.

Anime fans will already be well aware of the debate that exists between whether to watch a show in its original language or change it to your own (aka subs vs dubs), with strongly held opinions on both sides.

If you're still making your mind up, here's everything you need to know about Squid Game's dubbing and subtitling options.

Is Squid game dubbed into English?

Yes, Squid Game is dubbed into English.

In fact, season 1 was presented to US and UK viewers in English by default, which was sacrilege to those who have advocated for subtitling over dubbing.

The production's original language is, of course, Korean.

Voice actors been hired to dub over the show in English for those who find subtitles a challenge, but it is possible to change the settings on Netflix to hear the original actor's voices should you so choose.

How to watch Squid Game with subtitles

For those who wish to hear the actor's voices, rather than the voiceover artists, you can change the settings on Netflix easily from dubbing to subtitles on the series.

  1. First, find Squid Game on Netflix and press play on episode one.
  2. Use the on-screen menu at the bottom of the screen and click subtitles (it looks like a little speech bubble).
  3. Here, select "Korean (original)" and the show will play in the original language and default to English subtitles.
  4. You can also select the subtitles to be in a selection of other languages, should you wish to.

Who are the English dubbing voice cast?

Beyond the original Squid Game cast you see on screen, there are a series of voice actors who have performed the English language version of the show for dubbing.

For season 1, the English-language voice cast are were as follows:

  • Greg Chun as Seong Gi-hun
  • Stephen Fu as Cho Sang-woo
  • Paul Nakauchi as Jang Deok-su
  • Hideo Kimura as Oh Il-nam
